In North America, builders of mobile equipment like tractors and excavators have long used SAE standards to create general, dimensional, and performance specifications for their hydraulic hoses. However, many European manufacturers gravitate toward EN specifications instead.These standards help reduce inventory needs and engineering complexity for end users. They also ensure consistent reliability and performance, regardless of geographic region.
 

Hose Parameters

 
While American builders of mobile equipment have long relied on SAE standards, which provide dimensional and performance specifications for hydraulic hoses, these specifications don’t take into account all of the unique requirements of specific applications. European production standards, on the other hand, help to streamline hydraulic system design and improve productivity.
 
Among the most important parameters that need to be taken into consideration when selecting hydraulic hoses are size, temperature, and fluid compatibility. Other parameters such as bending radius can also affect the hose’s performance. It is vital to avoid routing a hose at a bend smaller than the specified minimum radius, which may shorten its lifespan and cause leaks.
 
The ISO 18752 standard provides nine pressure classes for maximum working pressure, with hoses rated according to their resistance to impulse in four grades. Each grade requires a particular number of impulse cycles at a certain temperature and impulse pressure. The hoses are further classified by their OD into standard types (AS, BS, and CS) and compact types (AC, BC, CC, and DC). They can be used in a variety of equipment.

Also, be sure to route the hoses in a way that will prevent excessive flexing and ensure the hose meets the minimum bend radius requirements of the hose specification. Creating insufficient bends can strain the reinforcement wires and cause leaks.

The wrong hose could cause damage to machinery and expose the operator to danger. It is also important to avoid using a hose that is not properly rated for the application.

The hydraulic fluid and working environment must also be compatible with the hose’s material and construction. This will protect the hose from chemical degradation and improve its lifespan.
 
Physical abuse of the hose is also a common problem. This can include side loads, abrasion and twisting. To reduce this, swivel-type adapters should be used and the hose should be routed away from moving components.
